Painting in Haarlem. The Collection of the Frans Hals Museum
This academic publication contains the entire collection of paintings of the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem down to 1850.A complete and detailed inventory. The 800 pages of this academic publication contain the entire collection of paintings of the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem by old masters down to 1850. The catalogue has a black-and-white illustration of each painting together with basic information on the artist, material, date and signature, provenance and bibliography. 170 masterpieces in the collection are singled out for more detailed description and commentary. An important section of the book is formed by the biographies of the Haarlem artists whose work is included in the collection. These biographies are based on intensive archival research. They throw light on how the artists lived and worked in the society of their day and on their relations with one another. Besides the catalogue proper and the biographies, this volume also includes important introductory essays on the artistic climate in Haarlem, the different genres, the ways in which the painters influenced one another, and the technical aspects of their work, as well as on the history of the Frans Hals Museum and the genesis of the collection.
