Magritte and photography
Magritte was an avid photographer. Like everyone else he took holiday snaps, had friends and acquaintances pose in surrealistic, stage-managed situations and he photographed models, objects and postures on which to base his paintings. Later on he himself became the subject of many a Belgian and foreign photographer. Here the author explores for the first time Magritte's relationship with photography. Patrick Roegiers immerses himself in the life of the painter by means of more than 200 previously unpublished photographs from Magritte's personal collection, showing his family, his mistress, muse and model Georgette, their holidays and their friends (including Scutenaire, Nougé and Mesens), the Belgian surrealists, their departure for Paris for the 'Attempt at the impossible', the return to Brussels and the intense painting activity that followed. Magritte was not an art photographer and rarely if ever resorted to the optical tricks of the photographer's trade. But his numerous photographs are suffused with a bizarre, surreal and above all unusual atmosphere which perfectly complements his paintings.Catalogue accompanying the exhibition Magritte and Photography in Bozar in Brussels, from 23 February to 13 May 2005.PressThis is a well considered and well designed book which contributes to a deeper understanding and appreciation of this key 20th century artist and citizen of Europe with his 'finely calibrated bourgeois persona' but with access to the springs of the unconscious mind. Perhaps this is why the book has a flame red cover – what you see is not necessarily what you get – the enigma persists.Inscape 31
