In this book Helen van Meene (1972) photographs adolescent girls in all their vulnerability and strength, this time with the Netherlands, Russia and the United States as wonderful settings. Van Meene continues to stimulate: the photographs show both the self-consciousness and the feeling of uncertainty about their own identity of the girls. But more than ever we are presented with pictures that question, supplement and correct the history of the photographic portrait in the most subtle way. The geographical aspects also play a special role in this story, besides Van Meene's role and the attitude of the adolescent girls, making this book an important piece of unusual 'contemporary history of photography'.Because many of van Meene's female subjects look like they're playing dress-up in abandoned rooms, her work echoes Francesca Woodman's dreamy self-portraiture and the grunge fashion photographs of Corinne Day and Lise Sarfati. But its staginess is softened by a genuine concern. Encouraged to express themselves, van Meene's kids can be touchingly self-conscious or self-possessed, but they're all wonderfully complicated works in progress.(The New Yorker)
