Brightside
An image should be intriguing.Jimmy Kets (°1979) is a young photographer. He worked as a freelancer for the Belgian daily De Morgen and since the beginning of 2009 for De Standaard. His photographs are also published in the Dutch broadsheets de Volkskrant and NRC Handelsblad and are distributed worldwide by Reporters photographic agency. He has won numerous prizes, including the Nikon Promising Young Photographer Award 2006, the Canvas prize De Film van mijn Leven (The Film of My Life) 2007, the VVJ (Flemish Association of Journalists) press photo prize 2007, and he has won two SABAM (Belgian Association of Authors, Composers and Publishers) prizes (2006 and 2007) for the funniest press photos. Kets lives and works in Ghent.Brightside contains 55 photographs, a strong selection that offers a confrontation with the intriguing world of Jimmy Kets. He shows people who are searching, although this description is too active. The people Jimmy Kets depicts are not 'in search of'. His subjects are already somewhere, often in a place especially designed to offer relaxation, happiness, even gratification: Disney World, holiday paradises, amusement parks, zoos, parties, and erotica fairs. A city too, Las Vegas, but then that's just one big amusement park.Yet, precisely in this cliché reality of ready-made, consumer happiness, people wander around helpless. He or she is alone. Lonely in a cardboard world. Anonymous in an anonymous space.
