Georges Baines
Baines stands for sobriety, accessibility and prestige. Baines sees building as a poetic, sensual act. 'Building is nothing but a sensual pleasure. If you have ever visited the Fotomuseum in Antwerp, you will know why Georges Baines won universal acclaim for its renovation and extension: the sobriety of the design and the accessibility of the building radiate great prestige. Those three ingredients - sobriety, accessibility and prestige - recur regularly in the work of this Antwerp architect, who regards building as a poetic, sensual act. 'Building is nothing but a sensual pleasure, like that of someone in love', Baines claims. 'Everyone who goes through an experience of that kind knows that there is a lot of pleasure and desire in architecture, that however much you may have done, you always want to do more.' Georges Baines designed primarily private homes, which enabled him to develop a close and personal relation with the client. It was his friendship with the Antwerp painter and sculptor Georges Vantongerloo and with the Swiss Bauhaus architect Max Bill that aroused Baines' interest in avant-garde and Modernist architecture. That led in turn to remarkable restorations, such as the Guiette house by Le Corbusier in Antwerp, the former technical school of Henry Van de Velde in Louvain, and Horta's Palace for Fine Arts in Brussels. This monograph, which covers the whole period of Baines' life and work, shows that his designs for private homes were also try-outs for his later public commissions, in which he incorporated his characteristic themes in a very forceful manner.
