It is the tenth anniversary of the Bs – a good reason to celebrate.B-architects with A-allure.If you drive out of the well-known Abdijstraat in Antwerp, you come to an elegant square, covered by a striking roof. A few streets further on, in the more fashionable Frankrijklei, is the Missoni shop, with large semi-transparent spheres hanging beneath a grid of strip lights on the ceiling. Just outside the city, in Edegem, is the unusual home of the Vanden Eynde-Debliek family. Those three constructions have one thing in common: they are projects of B-architecten, an idiosyncratic and surprising Antwerp firm of architects.B-architecten was founded in 1997 by three young lions: Evert Crols, Dirk Engelen and Sven Grooten. The trio achieved immediate recognition, because soon after its establishment it won the prestigious design competition for the renovation of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie/Beursschouwburg in Brussels.By now the practice has expanded to become one of the main protagonists in Belgian architecture thanks to its individual style and clear vision. For B-architecten does not see architecture as an isolated discipline. It is a multidisciplinary fabric that is the breeding ground for revolutionary ideas, which must lead to brilliant constructions. That vision is a thread that runs through all of the B-architecten projects, no matter how diverse they may be.
