Art in Architecture. Charles Vandenhove
Charles Vandenhove is a unique architect. He gives art a place of honour in his architecture.Initially the work of the Liège architect Charles Vandenhove was concentrated mainly in the Liège region, but his name and fame now extends to France and above all to the Netherlands. Vandenhove's unique link with visual art and artists is what distinguishes his oeuvre from that of other architects of his generation. Whether it is a new design (the Théâtre des Abbesses in Paris or the Palace of Justice in 's-Hertogenbosch, NL) or one of his numerous renovation projects (La Monnaie theatre in Brussels or the Hôtel Torrentius in Liège), Vandenhove invariably succeeds in integrating works of art into his architecture in such a way that both art forms live in true symbiosis. Panelling (the hallmark of Vandenhove's architecture) reworked by Sol LeWitt, Marthe Wéry and Jacques Charlier, tapestries designed by Luc Tuymans and Jeff Wall, designs by Daniel Buren and Patrick Corillon: each work of art finds a niche in Vandenhove's architecture, creating a deliberate interaction between the two disciplines. Or as he himself puts it: "Rather as at the time of the Renaissance, I would like the work of artists to be in line with mine; I would like the one not to be able to exist without the other. This is very ambitious, I know."PressCette collectrone donne 'l'absolue dimenseion' de son travail en ce 'rapport de réciprocité' qui plaît tant à l'architecte, rapport privilégié qu'on nommera alors l'amour de l'art.La Meuse
